Traumatic birth experiences
I bring a rich and extensive background in healthcare, having devoted over 40 years to the field. I began my career at the age of 18, working as a Nurse and then as a Midwife for 38 years. Throughout my career, I have gained a wealth of experience in all aspects of Midwifery, including antenatal, labour, post-natal, and community-based care.
My extensive experience includes several years working in the birth reflection service within the NHS. This role provided me with deep insights into the emotional and psychological needs of parents who go through traumatic birth experiences.
In 2017, I expanded my expertise by training as a Birth Trauma Resolution practitioner under the guidance of Jenny Mullan, an acclaimed Psychotherapist. This training equipped me with the skills to provide gentle, effective therapy for parents who had traumatic birth experiences related to childbirth. Additionally, I have trained in hypnobirthing with Katharine Graves, one of the UK's leading hypnobirthing practitioners, although I am not currently practicing this.
Beyond my specialised training, I am also a holistic therapist with experience in pregnancy massage, and I am a mother of two daughters. Despite my varied roles and interests, I remain a Registered Midwife, continuing my commitment to supporting parents through all stages of their birth experience.
Only recently has it come to light how commonplace traumatic birth experiences are. However, this has been a long time coming, with so many people feeling traumatised and dealing with difficult emotions after having a baby. Childbirth in itself can be a traumatic experience, and can leave people with lasting scars and emotional damage that can take years, even decades to recover from.
My background as a Midwife also gives me a better insight into client experiences. This is why I offer birth trauma therapy so that my clients can access meaningful talking therapy in a safe space without needing to go through NHS waiting lists and be back in the clinical environment which may be triggering.
With my therapy, the aim is to provide a safe, welcoming sanctuary, where you can feel heard, and where you can talk about your feelings in privacy and with utmost respect always granted to you. The sessions are centred on you, and you can guide the experience towards the practices and strategies that will suit you in dealing with your traumatic birth experience.
